Studies in Exodus

The studies below were presented beginning in December 2025 by Van Parunak.

The book is organized as two parallel panels whose parts correspond to one another: an introduction (1:1-4:17), followed by an expansion (4:18-40:38). In the first panel, Moses lives out the path on which he will lead the nation in the second. This table summarizes the overall structure:

Exodus 6:28-13:16

In 2:5-10 (D in the first panel), Moses was in Pharaoh's palace as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. Now he returns to challenge Pharaoh in the name of the Lord, bringing the plagues and strengthening Pharaoh's heart to resist the Lord.

In Exodus 6b-7, God repeats his commission to Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh. Aaron performs the initial sign of turning his rod into a dragon (not a snake, as Moses did in 4:3-4), and the plagues begin with the bloody Nile.
